8 Ways To Declare Your Energy Independence

The summer months are upon us. For most American families this means family vacations summer sports leagues and barbeques in the back yard are in full swing. However with high gas prices many families are being forced to cut back on some of these activities. In fact the latest trend is staycations or vacations taken in your hometown or nearby. There is relief on the horizon though if Americans are willing to fight for it! Did you know America’s current domestic gasoline production is enough to supply the countrys gasoline needs for 149 days? That number increases to 186 days if Americans increase the use of biofuels and practice simple conservation strategies. Exactly how many days is 186 days? January 1 2009 to July 4 2009 thats half of the year! As America’s families pinch their pennies to enjoy their summers we are issuing a call for unity in the fight to gain our Energy Independence. First lets talk about renewable energy and biofuels. Last year just seven percent of the U.S. energy supply was from clean and renewable domestic sources such as solar hydroelectric geothermal biofuels and wind energy. Just seven percent? That doesnt seem like much does it? Now what can you do to help? Next time you go to buy a car truck or SUV consider buying a hybrid or flexfuel vehicle. You can also practice fuel conservation. Here are some suggestions:

  • Take your car in for regular engine tune ups.
  • Install new air and fuel filters.
  • If you car is renewable fuels compatible use ethanolblends like E85 whenever and wherever possible.
  • Drive slower. Its amazing how much fuel you can save just buy slowing down a little.
  • Consider starting a carpool at work. Fewer cars on the road to fight in traffic!
  • Consolidate trips. Before heading out for your weekly errands plan out your trip so you can hit as many places as possible in an efficient manner.
  • Use mass transportation if its available. If your house and work are close to a public transit line such as a bus or subway consider buying a monthly pass.
  • Walk or ride a bike for short trips. Instead of driving four blocks to the grocery store just to get a few things on a nice day take a walk.
  • Add it all up and our country could fuel itself from January 1 2009 until July 4 2009 more than half the year. With all this talk about dependence on foreign oil isnt it nice to know that we could potentially fuel our own country for seven months! And with advancements and current research in the renewable fuels arena that number could expand much further. Want to do you part in fighting foreign oil? 4 Hondas Top Satisfaction Rankings

In an annual J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction survey of U.S. drivers released Thursday four Honda models topped the rankings for their vehicle segments more than any other automaker.

Honda Motor Companys newly redesigned CRV small crossover sport utility vehicle Ridgeline truck and Odyssey minivan all topped their segments in the survey that focuses on the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. For the top spot the subcompact Honda Fit tied with Toyota Motor Corporations Yaris.

MercedesBenz and BMW AG each had three models at the top premium segments. MercedesBenz got the top spot with its midsize EClass car and large Sclass car. Its GLClass tied with General Motors Corporation’s Cadillac Escalade EXT for a top spot in a segment that includes large luxury SUVs and crossovers.

Meanwhile BMW’s 3 Series and 6 Series cars as well as its X5 midsize crossover SUV all received top rankings.

Each had two vehicles at the top rankings were the GM Ford Motor Company Nissan Motor Company and Volkswagen AG. They were divided into 19 segments.

Neal Oddes J.D. Power’s director of product research and analysis said in a statement that models which were first introduced tend to get the highest scores. He added that it is necessary for car makers to get newvehicle launches right.

For a third consecutive year Porsche AG was the overall highestranking nameplate. The most improved nameplate was bagged by Toyota’s youthfocused Scion. Placing 2nd overall was the BMW nameplate followed by DaimlerChrysler AGs MercedesBenz Ford’s Jaguar and Toyota’s Lexus all luxury brands.

According to the surveyor J.D. Power the survey gave good news to the Detroit Three automakers. It said that GM had 11 models in the top three spots in their respective segments while Ford had four that includes the Edge crossover at the top of its segment. DaimlerChrysler had seven but the Dodge Charger was Chrysler Group’s only vehicle to make it to the top three.

Toyota along with the Toyota Lexus and Scion brands which are all well equipped with Toyota cornering lights had eight models in the top three by segment.

J.D. Power said that the survey is in its 12th year now and it gauges “owner delight with the design content layout and performance of their new vehicles.” It said that the results also offer a lesson for automakers which often depend on discounts and other incentives to boost sales. It says that in the survey drivers of some of the higherranking vehicles reported getting smaller incentives than those of some of the vehicles with low rankings.

Oddes said that it is essential for manufacturers to integrate those musthave’ features and design elements that will attract buyers. Such features and design elements also reduce the need for large customer cash rebates.

Based in Westlake Village Calif. J.D. Power said that the 2007 Automotive Performance Execution and Layout Study is based on the responses which were gathered by mail between February and May from more than 91000 people who bought or leased new 2007 modelyear vehicles.

The said survey is done to jive with J.D. Power’s annual initial quality rankings which were released earlier this month. Those rankings showed that Toyota was surpassed by Ford as leader of the pack. Ford grabbed more individual awards than any other automaker for the first time since 1998 when it tied for the top rank.
