Anyway back to the matter at hand! Buying a Volkswagen Bus needn’t be a nightmare as long as your head does the buying instead of your heart. I must admit that’s easier said than done. It’s all too easy to turn up see what could be your new bus rust and all and decide there and then even before you have looked around it that you want it and you are going to buy it. When you look around a VW bus try to add up in your head how much all those little repairs are going to cost. Bottoms of the doors are gone! 100 quid each one rear corner gone! 250 quid. It all adds up and you will quickly reach thousands of pounds. OK it’s difficult to find a perfect one and most will require some work and of course you might be looking for a project to work on your spare time but nevertheless it’s not worth paying 46 grand on something that is going to require another 2 or 3 spent on it. Only buy a project if it’s a good deal and you can see that it will be worth considerably more once it’s done. There is no point in throwing money away after all.
Bottoms of the cab doors this is not a reason not to buy a bus but factor in at least 100 for each new door. And remember you are going to need a respray once finished. That’s another 1000.
Rusty sliding door. These can very difficult to obtain and will cost between 300450 to buy new so decide whether any rust can be repaired and if it can’t then factor this in to your costs.
Rust around the bottom 12 inches of the body work. This is very serious and will require the services of a professional bodywork specialist. This is very expensive process that could require welding sanding smoothing painting. In most respects rust on the doors is more acceptable than rust on the body of the bus itself.
Check the wheel arches for rust as well these are made up of inners and outers and can be tricky to replace.
Check under the driver and passenger floor mates for holes. I could see the road through one I brought with my heart once!
Now check underneath with that torch that you remembered to take with you.
Make sure chassis members are in good condition and the out riggers. You do not want to replace these trust me you really don’t.
Make sure seals are intact also.
Now check the roof guttering. As with the body work this can cost a lot of money to put right.
Whilst you’re up there and if it has a poptop; check the condition of the canvas and seals.
Before you start it up let’s have a look at the engine.
Check any obvious oil or fuel leaks especially near the gear box. Also check for rust on either side of the engine to the right and left towards the rear light clusters. But most importantly make it appear that you know what you are doing.
This is usually enough for the current owner to admit to problems just as you get to them! You know the sort of problems that you probably would have noticed anyway. Now start the bugger! And listen to the beautiful sound of a Volkswagen Camper. Lets not get carried away it’s your heart again and not your head.
Anyway steering; make sure there is a steering wheel and that there is no play when wobbled.
And now the engine has gotten warm you can try the heater. First of all is warm air coming out? Heaters are a know problem with Volkswagen buses at the most serious the heat exchangers are knackered and will need replacing not cheap or at the very minimum it might just be that the hoses have holes and need repairing.

Welcome to the California Redwoods part of a unique ecosystem that includes these ancient trees as well as some of California’s prettiest coastline. Avenue of the Giants is 31 miles of Highway 101 about 5 hours north of San Francisco. Without even leaving your motor home you will see some of the biggest trees in the entire forest. The Avenue is also close to the Humboldt National Forest where the oldest stand of virgin oldgrowth redwood trees is still standing.

Then again if you do want to get out and walk among the giants there are trailheads all along the way. Any time you see a sign for a trail pull off and take it. Wherever it takes you it will be spectacular and well worth the walking. There are also lots of great places to stop and picnic.

The Avenue of the Giants is also dotted with quaint little towns where you can stop along the way to eat pick up souvenirs or get more information about these huge trees.

You’ve probably seen the pictures of the Shrine DriveThru tree. That is located in Myers Flat and there is a turnoff in the Avenues for it. Here you can drive through one of these massive trees!

But the redwoods are more than just trees. They are part of an entire ecosystem including prairies rivers and coastline as well. There are places like the Klamath River Overlook where you can look down on the spot where the Klamath River meets the Pacific Ocean. You may also catch sight of jumping salmon sunbathing sea lions flying seabirds seals and even gray whales.

In this pristine environment there are a variety of protected wildlife like the Roosevelt elk gray whales black bears and sea anemones. There are also lots of interesting little critters like the massive banana slugs so named because of their bright color and fruitsize.

The California redwoods are a great destination for motor home travelers and there are some wonderful campgrounds where you can stay.
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is open from May 1st to September 30th and is located right in the middle of the forest. There are 145 sites that allow both tents and RVs but there are restrictions on how long the motor homes can be. Call them for more information and reservations.

The campground at Jebediah Smith Redwoods State Park is open year around and its more than 100 sites accommodate RVs. There are no hookups though and they also have length restrictions. Call ahead for more information.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park has 2 campgrounds which are both quite a bit smaller than the others. One has 75 sites and the smaller one has 25 and doesn’t allow trailers. Prairie Creek is great for those who really want to get away and prefer slightly more rugged accommodations.

Everyone should see the redwoods at least once. You won’t believe it!

For more rugged camping in Big Bend try the Basin Campground. The drive down can be dangerous for big rigs so this site is recommended for smaller motor homes. Big rig parking can also be difficult here. Still it’s a great place if you want to really be deep in the wilderness.

Enchanted Rock is named after a giant rock that inspired fear in both Indians and settlers alike. The Indians of the area believed the huge rock was inhabited by ghosts and early adventurers avoided exploration for years by because they believed it swallowed people.

Located midstate near Fredericksburg the Enchanted Rock sits right on the edge of the Big Sandy Creek. It is one of the biggest “batholiths” giant underground rocks that has been uncovered by erosion. Nowadays the ghosts are all gone and you can go hiking climbing and backpacking on the rock. If you don’t feel up to climbing it there are plenty of hiking trails that surround the rock where you can get a good view of it.

Unfortunately you won’t be staying in your motor home right at the edge of the rock. The camping close to the rock has no RV hookups and no sites big enough to pull in to. Manufacturers Driving The Latest Tyre Technologies

The amount of advanced technology that goes into today’s premium branded car tyres is often not appreciated. Tyres after all are usually a distress purchase and to most consumers are simply “black and round”.

Tyre technology however is continuously evolving driven to a high degree by the technical demands of the vehicle manufacturers but also to a degree by the requirements of an increasingly demanding aftermarket.

Tyre performance can be affected by three things by changes to the tyre structure by altering the tread pattern and by varying the rubber compounds used in the tyre particularly in the tread. It is not surprising to see that the leading tyre manufacturers have a variety of proprietary technologies covering all these areas.

Take Bridgestone for example. Currently the world’s largest tyre manufacturer lists 14 key technologies covering casing tread pattern design and compounding. Some of these such as the use of unidirectional tread patterns silica compounds and rim guards to protect against kerbing damage are commonplace but some are unique to Bridgestone. Examples of the kind of technologies highlighted by Bridgestone are:

Diamond Bead A new construction method for the bead coil which increases the torsional stiffness of the bead coil to create a more uniform contact patch and therefore improved handling.

Flat Force Block A new tread block design which varies the angle of the block edges in accordance with their size. This provides a more uniform contact pressure and therefore a smoother ride.

Key Hole Sipes These narrow slots in the tread increase in width as the tyre wears helping the tyre to maintain performance as it gets older.

Multicell Compound An advanced and unique foam rubber based compound the high porosity of which anables water absorption and an increased “edgeeffect” to improve grip on ice.

Riblet These are circumferential microgrooves located on the surface of multicell compound tyres. These aborb a film of water on icy surfaces for improved grip when the tyres are new and before the multicell pores become visible.

If tyre manufacturers are continuing to evolve their tyre technology with a view to gaining a competitive advantage over their rivals there are certain areas of technology which are coming in for particular attention. One of these is undoubtedly the area of runflat tyres and the associated area of tyre pressure monitoring systems.
The leading manufacturers differ to some degree in the tyre technology they are using for their runflat systems.

Michelin’s PAX system for example incorporates a special wheel with an asymmetric profile which allows a support ring to be inserted which bears the vehicle’s load and allows it to be steered at zero pressure.

However their Michelin ZP system functions by means of more robust sidewalls reinforced with a special rubber compound to carry the vehicle weight. An innovative bead area delps the deflated tyre stay on the rim.

A further example of the use of compounding to obtain a stiffer sidewall is Goodyear’s RunOn Flat system. This system incorporates reinforced sidewall inserts using Goodyear’s own compounding technology in order to create higher sidewall striffness. In addition rim guards and tensioning devices on the outside of the sidewall are used to help maintain tension in the case of a flat.

Continental like Michelin has two systems. The ContiSupportRing is a metal ring on a flexible support directly mounted on the rim whereas the company’s SSR selfsupporting runflat tyre incorporates a special rubber reinforcement in the sidewall which takes the vehicle weight after pressure has been lost.

Bridgestone has also taken the support ring route with its Bridgestone Support Ring system.

So where next for tyres? We wait with interest to see how the tyre manufacturers can further innovate their products and keep improving tyre technology.
